Poltrona Frau Ikiperu Ceramic Vase
A tall ceramic vase, thrown and painted by hand, from the Ikiperu collection by Kristine Five Melvær for Poltrona Frau. Glossy glazes meet unglazed terracotta in a form that looks as though it has been waiting some centuries for your sideboard.
A classical silhouette, freshly considered
The Ikiperu Vase takes its proportions from the vessels of antiquity: a confident body, a defined neck and a lip that invites a generous bunch of flowers. What makes it unmistakably contemporary is its surface, where five areas of colour, glazed and unglazed, meet in crisp, deliberate bands.
It is the largest piece of the collection and the most architectural. On a console or a dining table it lends the room a quiet sense of history, without a trace of the museum about it.
An ancient name, a modern hand
‘Ikiperu’ is the name of the goddess Cupra, venerated by the Picentes and the Etruscans, the ancient peoples of what are now the Italian regions of Marche and Umbria. The collection, designed in 2023 by the Norwegian designer Kristine Five Melvær, begins with the archetypal forms of classical vessels and carries them into the language of contemporary design.
Made by hand, and proudly so
Every vase is thrown on the wheel and painted by hand, so that no two are entirely alike. Small variations in the glaze are the signature of that process rather than a flaw. White felt pads on the base protect the surface on which it stands, and a well-chosen arrangement completes the picture.
